Sarah I. Penney Sarah Penney grew up on the Flandreau Santee Sioux reservation in Flandreau, South Dakota. She is Nez Perce/Santee Sioux and an enrolled member of the Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho. Ms. Penney has been involved with numerous art projects for over 20 years. She is a self-taught artist and enjoys the freedom of creating new art pieces for family and friends combined with her professional career as an educator. Ms. Penney attributes her artistic talent to her parents, both of whom have a long history of creating artistic projects for family and friends. She exhibited creative ability at a young age and continued to build upon her talents through paintings and other projects, both for fun and by the request of others. Her experience includes billboard designs, advertisements, book illustrations, cards, murals, beadwork, canvas paintings, various logos and brochures, and portraits upon request. Ms. Penney holds a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Idaho and a Bachelors Degree in Child Development and Family Studies from South Dakota State University. Ms. Penney has grant writing experience as well as extensive experience working in programs that serve low-income, first-generation college students. Her experience includes serving as Director for the University of Idaho’s Teacher Recruitment Program as well as Special Assistant for Native American Affairs within the Office of Diversity and Human Rights. Ms. Penney has served as a consultant to numerous organizations and has conducted numerous workshops designed to improve retention strategies for Native American students. Ms. Penney currently resides in Lapwai, Idaho on the Nez Perce reservation (click for family photo). She is involved with various art projects and enjoys working with acrylic and mixed media on canvas. Her artwork is inspired by her Nez Perce heritage and her paintings are reflective of the beauty of family, elders, tradition, and the preservation of Nez Perce culture.
